Gail manages the  propagation of shrubs and herbaceous perennials and the small grasses.  She is also the primary source of information and advice.

 

The third member of the team is Bess, who is the ears and eyes of the Nursery.  She enthusiastically welcomes visitors during daytime.  Her obsessions are balls, mowers, concrete mixers, small tractors, and moving spades and shovels — not plants.

Westshores is a small retail nursery. Gail Summerfield has managed the business since 1985.   She is a part-time college lecturer, and has a reputation with gardening clubs for the quality of her talks and presentations.

 

We became interested in ornamental grasses about 12 years ago, when a local designer asked us to supply plants for landscaping projects on industrial and commercial sites.  The Nursery now specialises in grasses, but we still produce some perennials and a selection of large shrubs in 5 litre pots.  Many of our perennials make excellent planting companions for grasses. Each year we produced a dozen or so varieties of bamboo. Westshores is well known in the region for its ornamental grasses. Customers come to us from far and wide to find suitable specimens, and ask for advice on their care and use in planting schemes. John Summerfield is responsible for the production of our large grasses and bamboos.
