Westshores Nurseries specialises in the production of ornamental grasses and autumn flowering perennials. Gail Summerfield began collecting scented pelargoniums as a hobby a few years ago. The collection has grown to more than 40 varieties and we now sell them at talks, plant fairs and by mail order.
A mail order service operates using email and the phone. Customers are welcome to call at the nursery, but are advised to make contact beforehand. Help and advice are available with choosing grasses when people are planning a bed or new garden.
Talks, Visits & Workshops
Proprietors Gail & John Summerfield have been giving talks to gardening clubs and other groups for over 20 years. They have an established reputation as entertaining and informative speakers.
Garden clubs and other interested groups can also book nursey visits and workshops.
Who are we?
Westshores Nurseries was opened in 1985 by Gail Summerfield and operated for many years as a small garden centre.
She taught horticulture part-time at Bishop Burton College in East Yorkshire for 16 years bringing together her academic background as a botanist and hands on experience as a nurseryman. For 6 years she taught private courses.
John Summerfield joined the business full time in 1995 just as the nursery was responding to a request from a garden designer to produce a wide selection of ornamental grasses for some large scale commissions. He became responsible for the propagation and production of large garsses and bamboos.
Gail and John work together on the preparation of new talks and revising long established ones. Gail is responsible for the content and John takes the photographs and organises the technology.
In 2005 Westshores narrowed its focus to concentrate on ornamental grasses and autumn flowering perennials. At the same time the portfolio of talks for gardening clubs was significantly increased and a decision made to exhibit at shows. Harrogate, September 2013 was their last show and with a handful of gold awards already to their credit they achieved a premier gold with silver salver and rated second best in show.
Although Westshores no longer exhibits at shows they regularly have stalls at plant fairs in Yorkshire. Gail and John will be at RHS Harlow Carr, Burton Agnes Hall, Newby Hall and Scampston Walled Garden, The dates will be posted on the relevant websites.
Where are we?
Winterton is 5 miles north of Scunthorpe just off the A1077 and 7 miles west of the southern end of the Humber Bridge. Our post code is DN15 9QF.
We no longer have regular opening times. You are welcome to call in, but we suggest, if you are travelling some distance that you contact us beforehand [01724 733940 or 07875732535 or email]
There is a small car park at the top of the drive. If the gate is closed, please ring the bell and wait for us to open up. It is likely you will be greeted by Django, who is the eyes and ears of the Nursery. He is a very energetic and friendly Dutch Herder.
He won't make any attempt to escape, but he is a little lively. We need to put him on a lead before you come through the gate.
Our colleague Neil Timm at The Fern Nursery, Grimsby Road, Binbrook, Lincs. LN8 6DH is 35 miles [1 hour] to the SE of Westshores. He has a secluded garden and a wide variety of hardy ferms propagated by him.
